Fluff the Builder

Tweet I could never have married a man who couldn’t work with his hands. I grew up watching my Dad and his friends constantly tinkering with something. I think they were trying to improve things. I’m not sure how they did, but they always seemed happy working outside, building and fixing things. As a result, [...]

A Little Peculiar Reading

A cross between Harry Potter and Nanny McPhee, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children follows Jacob as he travels to an island near Wales trying to better understand the last utterances of his dying grandfather. On the island, Jacob discovers the Miss Peregrine’s Home and begins to realize that the strange photos his grandfather showed him as a child might not have been manipulated.

Dog

My Dog is Fat

Tweet My husband takes every opportunity to make fun of my poor little dog because she’s fat and can’t control her food. He even has her on weight management food, which we fondly call her “broccoli food.” Here’s a recent conversation in our house: Me: “I’m getting me one of those teacup Beagles.” Fluff: “You [...]

Me

Kenna Ray is not my name; it’s my Hillbilly moniker.

It’s used only by those who know me best. Some even call me “K-Ray” for short.

I’m a 30-something journalist turned college professor and Ph.D. candidate. More importantly, I’m a wife and a mother with an extremely spoiled dog.

These days I’m just a small town mom with a big city attitude.

Fluff

Thank God my husband couldn't say his own name when he was a little boy. He called himself Fluffy, which inspired me to nickname him Fluffaluffacus after we started dating in high school. After 13 years of marriage, my best friend and partner in crime's nickname has been simplified to Fluff. We'll be together forever, perhaps because no one else would deal with either one of us. More likely because we have a deal that whoever leaves has to take the kids.

Doop

I don't know how the "Doop song" started, but I'll never forget the night it really caught on. I had sang the song, "I love you. I love you. Doopity, Doopity, Doopity, Doo" to my infant daughter for months. Then, during an extended sickness in which she would only sleep if I held her, I began to cry from the soreness of days of constant cuddling. My sweet little girl looked up at me and sang, "I love you. I love you. Doopity, Doopity, Doop, Doop, Doop." She's been my Super Doop ever since. It was the first of many times where my now 10-year-old mini me has made me strive to be a better person.

Mommy Man

There is nothing on this earth as wonderful as having a handsome little prince. The bond between a mother and son is indescribable. My Mommy Man stole my heart from the minute I saw him. His was a face I recognized as belonging to the man I love. Where his face is a reflection of Fluff, his hands and feet belong to my father. A perfect combination of my special guys. Now 8, he's still my favorite boy in this world, and I am his favorite queen. The Mommy Man melts my heart every day with his impeccable manners and constant praise.
